Training Description

Course Description: Pain Management & Ethics

This course provides an in-depth exploration of pain management principles, ethical considerations, and best practices in treating pain across diverse populations. It highlights evidence-based approaches, the impact of trauma on pain perception, and the complexities of opioid use, including the ongoing opioid epidemic. The course also addresses disparities in pain management, implicit biases in healthcare, and emerging treatments like multimodal therapies and opioid reversal agents.

Goals:

  1. Enhance Knowledge of Pain Management Practices

    • Provide healthcare professionals with current evidence-based pain management strategies, including multi-modal therapy and non-opioid alternatives.
  2. Promote Ethical Decision-Making in Pain Treatment

    • Equip participants with the ability to navigate ethical dilemmas related to pain management, balancing patient autonomy, beneficence, and justice.
  3. Address Disparities and Bias in Pain Care

    • Educate healthcare professionals on recognizing and mitigating implicit biases that impact pain treatment for marginalized populations.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the key principles of pain management and evidence-based best practices.
  2. Discuss the impact of trauma (e.g., COVID-19, cancer, and abuse) on pain perception and treatment.
  3. Evaluate ethical principles and biases that influence pain management decisions.

Suggested Participants: For all Licensed Social Workers, Ethics and Pain Management is required once every 3 years for license renewal. This training offers 2 of the needed 2.0 hours in Pain Management training and 1.0 hours in Ethics training, for a total of 3.0 CE hours.
