Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network's CMHLS

Presents:

Quarterly Self-Care Training for the System of Care

With:

Shaun Cooper, PhD, LP

Date: February 24, 2026

Time: 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Location: Virtual - Zoom

Course Description:

The presenter will define the phenomenon of Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) as a consequence of providing clinical services for youth who have been exposed to trauma. The cumulative nature of the phenomenon will be emphasized, along with the fact that its occurrence does not reflect incompetence or inexperience on behalf of the clinician. While normalizing the risk, the presenter will emphasize what factors promote resilience and recovery in the face of STS, including considerations from both self-care and CE-CERT perspectives. Trainees will be encouraged to consider what aspects of their personal and professional development may heighten their susceptibility to STS and how self-monitoring, relationship development, and decision-making can mitigate risk.

Course Objectives:

Objective #1: Trainees will be able to cite the various domains of functioning in which STS will manifest itself.

Objective #2: Trainees will be able to identify what occupational resources or practices research has revealed to be most helpful for behavioral health professionals in reducing the impact of STS.

Objective #3: Trainees will be able to cite two important myths regarding why STS occurs.

Objective #4: Trainees will be able to identify three important aspects of their vulnerability regarding STS.

Objective #5: Trainees will be able to cite compatible aspects of self-care and CE-CERT oriented approaches to managing STS.
