Course Description:
This presentation provides an in-depth overview of human trafficking as it impacts pediatric and adolescent populations, with a focus on behavioral health settings. Participants will examine risk factors, recruitment tactics, trauma responses, and warning indicators specific to minors. The course integrates trauma-informed care principles, mandated reporting responsibilities, and interdisciplinary response strategies within crisis and community-based environments. Case-based learning will allow participants to apply screening tools, safety planning techniques, and referral pathways to real-world scenarios.
Course Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Define labor and sex trafficking as they apply to minors under federal and state law.
- Identify at least five behavioral and psychosocial indicators of trafficking in pediatric populations.
- Analyze trauma responses commonly observed in trafficked youth.
- Apply trauma-informed interviewing techniques appropriate for minors.
- Demonstrate appropriate documentation and mandated reporting procedures.
- Develop a coordinated referral and safety planning approach for suspected youth trafficking cases.
