Training Description

Among the many important revelations that have emerged from the Adverse Childhood Events study is the realization that the occurrence of trauma during youth is not an unusual phenomenon.  Despite this, many young victims of trauma grow up to live happy, productive lives characterized by self-fulfillment and meaningful accomplishments.  This observation has given rise to important discussions about protective factors that either mitigate risk for the occurrence of trauma or that support resilience or recovery from trauma.  This training is intended to review important findings from this literature and to engage clinicians' reflections on their role in identifying protective factors during the intervention process.  Factors that may contribute to biases or assumptions that impede such identification, such as cultural misunderstanding, personal experience, or media messaging, will be considered, as will practices and attitudes that can aid the clinician in bolstering protective factors.

Learning Objectives:

1. Trainees will be able to identify factors related to three empirically validated dimensions of resilience: individual capacities/resources, relationships with primary caregivers, and contextual factors that promote a sense of belonging.

2. Trainees will be able to identify three examples of "dysfunctional" behavior on behalf of their clients that, from a person-centered perspective, may reflect important elements of resilience.

3. Trainees will be able to cite their own personal cultural perspectives, experiences, or consumption of media that may contribute to misperceptions concerning the prospect of resilience.
