This intensive 1-day training provides accurate, up-to-date information
about the basics of Social Security Entitlements and work incentives.
Training Description:
Through in depth discussion lead by a state program specialist who is certified as a Community Work Incentives
Coordinator and a state customer service representative who is certified as a Community Work incentives
Coordinator, has extensive experience with benefits planning for individuals who are first entering Community
Mental Health treatment services who is also a certified peer support specialist and who has been on benefits at one
point and utilized several work incentives programs first hand. There will be power point slides available, handouts,
and case discussion. Participants will examine benefit programs pertaining to SSI, SSDI, Medicare and Medicaid.
Training will cover:
Topics include:
• The basics of SSI and SSDI and DAC.
• Where to start when applying for benefits.
• How Social Security determines if an individual is disabled.
• What is next after applying for benefits.
• An overview of the Work Incentive Programs available to beneficiaries.
• Contacts for Assistance how to link to your local SSA office and what to ask for.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
1. Discuss 3 key aspects of State and Federal benefit programs (pertaining to SSI, SSDI, Medicare, Medicaid)
2. Describe State and Federal work incentives that support individuals to return to self-sufficiency through work
3. Discuss accurate, up-to-date information about the basics of Social Security Entitlements and work incentives
4. Describe 3 ways to initiate conversations with beneficiaries of SSDI and SSI to alleviate their fear of working
5. Identify 3 ways that their agencies could better support the individuals they serve with the training information
and resources
Who Should Attend:
• This training contains content appropriate for clinicians, administrative/executive leadership and social workers
(micro and macro) at all levels of practice.
Rate: $49 per person. Fee includes materials, continental breakfast, lunch and breaks
Continuing Education Credits for Licensed Social Workers: The Michigan Association of Community Mental
Health Boards (MACMHB), provider #1140, is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the
Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) www.aswb.org, through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE)
program. MACMHB maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Approval Period: 11/10/13-11/10/16. Social
workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval. Social workers participating in this
course will receive 4.75 Clinical Continuing Education Clock Hours. Course Delivery Method: Face-to-Face training.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, through the Michigan Association of CMH Boards,
has provided funding for this initiative through Federal Community Mental Health Block Grant.
Evaluation: There will be an opportunity for each participant to complete an evaluation of the training and the instructor.

*National Accreditation rules indicate that if you are over 5 minutes late, you forfeit your CEUs for the entire training.
Please note that this is a National rule that MACMHB must enforce or we could lose our provider status to provide CEUs
in the future. This rule will be strictly followed.
Certificate Awarded: At the conclusion of this training, bring your CEU verification form to the MACMHB Staff to be
initialed. You will turn in the top sheet and retain the bottom sheet which serves as your certificate of participation.
PRESENTERS:
Marty Alward
Marty Alward is the Program Consultant on Clubhouses for The Michigan Department of Community Health,
Administration on Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities. Formerly, Marty was the Information and Outreach
Coordinator for the Medicaid Infrastructure Grant. In that position, Marty was trained as a Work Incentives Coordinator,
managed the Benefits Information Network (BIN) initiative across the state, and worked on several web-based benefits
tools and various supported employment and micro-enterprise efforts. He continues to offer benefits planning training as
an independent consultant. Marty also has several years of experience providing support to people with disabilities to
increase their vocational and employment opportunities and assisting them to navigate community resources. Marty has
been trained and fully certified through Social Security Administration's (SSA) national training program with Virginia
Commonwealth University (VCU).
Cynthia Brooks-Jones
Cynthia Brooks-Jones works for the Department of Community Health, Contract Management and Customer Service
Division. Cynthia serves as a Customer Service Contact for Behavioral Health, Developmental Disabilities, and
Substance Abuse. Formerly, Cynthia worked as a member of the Site Review Team which went out to all of the
CMHSPs within Michigan to Review for Quality and Service. Cynthia is a Certified Peer Support Specialist and is
trained as a Work Incentives Coordinator. Cynthia has been trained and fully certified through Social Security
Administration’s (SSA) national training program with Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). She has background
working for Genesee County Community Mental Health as a consumer support staff in Clubhouse Services, Community
Housing and homeless outreach, as well as working with benefits planning.

has provided funding for this initiative through Federal Community Mental Health Block Grant.
Cancellation Policy: Substitutions are permitted at any time. No-shows will be billed at the full training rate. All cancellations will be assessed a $20 administrative fee.
Cancellations received less than 10 business days prior to the conference will be charged the full conference rate and no refunds will be given.
