Conference Objectives and Topics
Learning Objectives: At the end of this conference participants will be able to: Identify various definitions of hearing loss that will be useful during the therapeutic process when serving Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind individuals.
Identify four stages of grief models associated with hearing loss and articulate a framework for helping these individuals work through each stage. Improve skills in providing services to the hearing challenged by gaining knowledge of (prevalence of hearing loss; early detection, prevention, and protection; types and causes of hearingloss; impacton family relationships, work experiences and retirement.
Identify four cultural orientationsthat a hearing challenged person transitions through, discuss useful strategies during their transitional process, and identify professional trainings needed to assist them during the transitional process.
List three major contributing factors leading to misdiagnosis of Deaf individuals that have important ramification for the Deaf individuals and providers, and discuss collaborative efforts to minimize misdiagnosis.
