Sandra Adell, Professor of Literature, Department of Afro-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and author of an issues-oriented memoir that looks critically at the expansion of casino gambling from the perspective of a woman with a PhD in Literature and position at a major research university who risked losing everything after becoming addicted to slot machine gambling.

The objectives of this presentation are to:

  • Discuss how race, ethnic, and gender differences affect a person's decision to seek help.
  • Re-examine current discourse about the "zone" in narratives about slot machine gambling.
  • Identify a support program for problem gamblers that does not follow the 12 step model.

  • Understand Gambling Disorder form the perspective of a problem gambler.
  • Learn what tools are helpful to a problem gambler in their journey to recovery.

  • Understand through demonstration how emotional intelligence can be used as a tool for

        emotional / cognitive regulation and for therapeutic intervention.

  • Identify and discuss the 4 quadrants of emotional intelligence.
  • Examine the science of addiction and emotions.
  • Discuss characteristic features of gambling addictions as it relates in similarity to SUD.
  1. Insider’s View of Gamblers Anonymous: Open Meeting

                                          The objectives of this workshop are to

  • Observe Gamblers Anonymous activity through attendance at an open meeting.
  • Differentiate between abstinence and the 12 steps of recovery, using step 1 as a learning tool, as demonstrated during the meeting.
  • Demonstrate how the 12-steps program can improve and change lives through the translation of personal recovery stories and support. All stories heard at the open meeting are authentic and will be used as learning tools.
  1. Strength-Based Recovery Oriented Treatment Plans for Gambling Disorder

                                          The objectives of this workshop are to:

  • Describe how "Recovery" relates to a person's desire to acquire/reacquire the ability to perform a critical life function that has been lost to disabling symptoms of gambling disorder or developmental condition.
  • Identify specific symptoms or conditions that interfere with critical life functions.
  • Identify individual level of readiness per 5 factors of participation meant to assist in recovery of critical life functions.
  • Design a minimum of 2 objectives (discernible & verifiable behaviors) that match the level of readiness for working toward the recovery of a critical life function.
  • Design an assistive and collaborative intervention for each objective.
  1. Successful Peer Support in Gambling Disorder —

          The objectives of this workshop are to:

  • Identify how the stages of change directly impact recovery.
  • Define self-determination and demonstrate the process of goal setting.
  • Discuss recovery as it relates to mental health.
  • Illustrate the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP).

Brenda-Joyce G. Orozco Markert-Green, DMFT, LMFT, LLP, LPCC, founder of Afterglow Counseling Mediation and Family Services Centers, adjunct faculty with La Sierra University, Executive Board Member of the MI Association on Problem Gambling and HMSA gambling panel.

        The objectives of this presentation are to:

  • Define online gaming and its relevance to gambling addiction.
  • Understand online gaming risks, and differentiate between benign and problematic gaming behaviors.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of diagnostic criteria, treatment modalities, options, and describe responsible gaming tools and safeguards.

Who Should Attend?  CEOs, COOs, CFOs, medical directors, clinical directors, case workers, supports coordinators, and other practitioners at all levels of practice (beginning, intermediate and/or advanced).

 

 

Continuing Education Credits:

Social Work:  The Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards (MACMHB), provider #1140, is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) www.aswb.org, through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program.  MACMHB maintains responsibility for the program.  ASWB Approval Period: 11/10/13-11/10/16. Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval. Social workers participating in this course will receive 5.5 Clinical Continuing Education Clock Hours.  Course Delivery Method: Face-to-Face seminar.

Gambling Disorder - PENDING

Substance Abuse:  The Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards is approved by the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) to sponsor educational training for professional certification. MACMHB maintains the responsibility for the program and content. Substance Abuse Professionals participating in this symposium may receive a maximum of 5.5 contact hours.

Certificate Awarded:  At the conclusion of this symposium, bring your “Verification and Certificate of Attendance” form to the MACMHB Staff to be initialed.  You will turn in the top sheet and retain the bottom sheet which serves as your certificate of participation.

Evaluation: There will be an opportunity for each participant to complete an evaluation of the course and the instructor.  If you have any issues with the way in which this training was conducted or other problems, you may note that on your evaluation of the conference or you may contact MACMHB at 517-374-6848 or through our webpage at www.macmhb.org for resolution.
