Event Description/Learning Objectives: |
Compelling new research on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) young people and their families, conducted by Dr. Caitlin Ryan and her Family Acceptance Project team at San Francisco State University, shows that families have a dramatic influence on their LGBT children's health and well-being. Existing approaches to serving LGBT adolescents have focused almost exclusively on serving LGBT youth alone and through peer support, rather than in the context of their families. Dr. Ryan's work is changing the paradigm to decrease risk for suicide, homelessness, school victimization, and HIV and to promote wellness and positive development for LGBT youth and young adults in the context of their families. According to the Center for American Progress, her work is generating a revolution in public policy for LGBT children and youth. In this presentation, Dr. Ryan will share key findings, and discuss practical implications for ethnically and religiously diverse parents, families, youth-serving professionals, and other caring adults. Whether you are a parent, caregiver, or provider who works in school, clinical, or community settings, you will leave with concrete strategies for rethinking approaches to supporting the health and well-being of all young people, including LGBT youth. |
